French's has fried fish and chips on the quayside at Wells-next-the-Sea since William Thomas French opened it in 1921 — over a hundred years and four generations of the same family, run now by Marcus French and his daughter Alanna. It is a proper old seaside chippy, on the harbour where the boats still land, the sort of place a north Norfolk day is built around. It was shortlisted for a national fish-and-chip award in 2025, but the credential that matters is the century on the same quay. Get the fish, sit on the wall, watch the tide. That is the whole of it, and it is plenty.
