Halewood and Sons has traded as booksellers from Friargate in Preston since 1867, when William Halewood first opened the shop, and the business remains in family hands under Mike and Carolyn Halewood, direct descendants of the founder. The shop was a founding member of the Antiquarian Booksellers' Association and has held continuous ABA membership since 1906, a rare span for any independent bookseller still trading from its original shop. Stock runs toward travel and exploration writing, atlases and maps, fine bindings and illustrated books, with a particular depth in Arthur Conan Doyle and Sherlock Holmes material that draws collectors from outside Lancashire. Rather than maintain a standalone shopfront website, the Halewoods list inventory through the trade's own online marketplace, leaving the physical shop on Friargate as where most business still happens.
