James Freeman founded his eponymous gallery on Upper Street in 2003, running it from number 354 near the Angel. The programme explores contemporary approaches to historicism, showing artists who set current techniques against art-historical references and research. Freeman built the gallery's reputation partly on giving early platforms to younger artists alongside more established names, treating the discovery of new talent as a founding purpose rather than an afterthought. Exhibitions rotate between solo shows and curated group presentations, changing regularly enough that repeat visitors see new work each time. The gallery also takes part in major art fairs, including the London Art Fair and the British Art Fair, extending its reach beyond the Islington shopfront. It opens Wednesday to Saturday, keeping to gallery hours rather than retail ones.
