Newlyn has had a serious contemporary gallery since 1895, when the building on New Road opened with the backing of the Le Grice family, who gave the land, and the philanthropist John Passmore Edwards. The educational charity that runs it added a second venue in 2007, converting Penzance's former telephone exchange on Princes Street, and the two — a couple of kilometres apart along the promenade — show contemporary work in all media by regional, national and international artists, with a café and shop at each end. A member of the Plus Tate network, with a community programme that runs from children's art clubs to a creative social for over-65s. A single pass covers both venues for twelve months, cheaper for Penwith residents, free for under-18s and students.
