A village free house on the A30 east of Penzance, bought out of pub-company hands by Pete Elvin in 1999 and a real-ale fixture ever since — in the Good Beer Guide continuously since 2002, and Cornwall CAMRA Pub of the Year three times over. Penzance Brewing Co, set up in the former stables behind the pub in 2008, feeds eight handpumps and a gravity-serve brewers' bar with Potion No 9, Trink, Scilly Stout and the rest; its Penzance Mild was named CAMRA's Champion Beer of Britain in 2025. After Elvin's death the pub closed for twenty months, reopening in December 2025 under Paul and Jane Badcock, who run the Packet at Rosudgeon. The kitchen is back on, the dining room occupies a former doctor's surgery, and there is still no television and no gaming machine in the place.
