The copperware raised in Newlyn from 1890 onward was some of the finest of the arts-and-crafts tradition, and the craft had lain dormant for some forty years when Michael Johnson re-established a working copper shop in the village in 2004. Johnson — who trained under the armourer Terry English — works bespoke commissions in copper, bronze and brass from a unit on Wesley Place; pieces have gone to Claridge's, Harrods, the Hampton Court Flower Show and an Eton College roof. He was a Heritage Crafts Awards finalist in 2023. The workshop is open by appointment: ring ahead and he will show you the tradition at first hand.
