William Nichols set up the stall in 1946, selling jellied eels from a barrow after leaving the armed forces, and traded at Great Yarmouth Market throughout the post-war decades. His granddaughter, Christine Nichols-George, has worked behind the counter for 45 years and now runs the business with her husband Darran and daughter Shakira, making it a three-generation family trade marking 80 years on the market in 2026. What began as a single jellied-eel barrow has grown into a stall selling cockles, prawns, mussels, whelks and Cromer crab, with most of the seafood sourced from fishermen working the Norfolk coast and the prized eels still brought in from London. Christine has said she hopes to reach a full century of trading at the same pitch, with Shakira expected to take on the stall in time.
