Chris Brennan and his daughter Joanna opened the bakery on Orford's market square in November 2010, in a fifteenth-century building scaled for a village and ambitions that turned out not to be: the sourdough and pastry earned the BBC's Best Food Producer award in 2012, and the chocolate they began making from raw beans in the back grew into Pump Street Chocolate, now produced at Bentwaters and disclosed here as the operation's second act — Observer Food Monthly's Best Food Producer in 2022, with a King's Award for Enterprise following in 2023. A pink-fronted village bakery holding a royal warrant for trying harder than anyone: Orford's square has seen stranger things, but not many.
