Reid of Liverpool has dealt in second-hand and antiquarian books since 1975, run by Gerry Fitzgerald under his mother's maiden name, from what is said to be the city's only surviving Georgian retail-and-residential building, from 1785, on Mount Pleasant. Some forty thousand titles fill it, floor to ceiling, in the reassuring disorder of a proper old bookshop. In a city that has lost most of its independent booksellers, it is the survivor. Climb the stairs, get lost, and let the building do the rest.
