When the old Mitchells Bakery site opposite Anfield's Kop was slated for demolition, an arts project — Jeanne van Heeswijk's 2 Up 2 Down, begun in 2010 — became a community campaign, the campaign became a co-operative in June 2012, and the co-operative became a bakery again in October 2013, its building held by a community land trust so it can never be flipped out from under the neighbourhood. It is now a registered community benefit society with sixteen employees and a training programme feeding local people into work. The bread is the business; the ownership is the story. Open six days, and on Anfield event days it works to the crowd's clock.
