The Sun Inn stands in the village of Welshampton, a few miles from Ellesmere, and operates as an independent freehouse under Sun Inn Limited, whose directors are Paul Fletcher and David Laycock. The building was closed for four years before being refurbished by Sircar Builders of Whitchurch and reopened in 2012, retaining a pair of open fires and a set of small connecting rooms rather than one open bar. The regular beer on the bar is Salopian's Shropshire Gold, with four further changing lines drawn mostly from Shropshire and north Wales breweries such as Hobsons, Magic Dragon and Purple Moose. Food is served alongside the ales, using locally sourced ingredients where possible. Three en-suite bedrooms are let above the bar, offering a base for exploring the surrounding Shropshire and Welsh border countryside.
