A free house on the Moor held by the same family for seven generations, with an interior CAMRA rates of outstanding national historic importance — three stars on its National Inventory, Grade II listed, the beer still served by gravity from a narrow taproom. The pub claims a licence back to 1660; historians date the building to around 1800; nobody disputes the fifty consecutive editions of the Good Beer Guide, a run marked in 2023. For nearly sixty years the landlord was the Reverend John Barrington Bennetts, who kept the town's parish church and the pub at once until his death in 2011; his granddaughter Amy Bennetts has it now, and in 2013 reinstated the oyster bar on the marble counter an ancestor installed. The pub's tobacconist counter traded until 2006 — its room is now the Old Tobacconist gin and wine bar. Draught Bass on gravity, Cornish casks beside it.
