The White Hart at Llanddarog is a thatched inn that has stood, by the date it claims, since around 1371 — and since 1994 it has been the Coles family's, three generations now running the pub, brewing its beer and distilling its spirits under one very old roof. The brewery is tiny and brews, as they put it, invariably for the pub only; there is cider, and a separate still turning out whisky and rum. It is a genuine rarity: a medieval Welsh inn that makes almost everything it pours, kept by one family and tied to no one. Thatch, low beams, and beer brewed on the premises. Check the days before you go.
