Craig and Sarah opened Audela in 2012 and moved the restaurant to its present address on Bridge Street in 2017, taking over the former Cowe building, once home to a family firm that made the Berwick Cockle sweet for over 170 years and appears in L.S. Lowry's paintings of the town. Craig, born and trained locally, cooks a modern menu built around Northumberland and Scottish Borders produce, while Sarah runs the front of house after years in the trade. The name recalls the Audela, the last vessel built at Berwick's shipyard in 1979, later fitted out as a private cruise yacht. The dining room keeps to a single sitting most evenings, with a fixed-price format that changes through the seasons rather than a standing carte.
