Barnes of Keighley traces its counter back to 1890, when Bob Scaife first sold meat from a stall in Keighley's outdoor market. Ben Barnes took a Saturday job there at thirteen, and by nineteen had bought both the market stall and the Queens Road shop, bringing them together under one name. The business still trades from both sites: a counter at the Canopy in Keighley Market and the standalone shop on Queens Road, where dry-cured bacon is made using methods passed down through generations of butchers who trained on the same premises. In 2025 the shop was named Best Butchers in Yorkshire, judged on a mix of customer votes, a mystery shopper visit and a trade panel. New butchers still learn the trade there through the same apprenticeship route as their predecessors.
