Bents Green Nurseries runs from a site at the end of Muskoka Avenue in south-west Sheffield, growing much of its own stock rather than buying in ready-grown plants. Perennials, alpines and shrubs are propagated on site, alongside seasonal bedding plants, geraniums in a range of colours, vegetable plants and fruit bushes including currants and gooseberries. From mid-November the nursery sells Nordmann fir, spruce, Scots pine and Fraser fir Christmas trees grown to size, together with hand-made wreaths. Staff build hanging baskets and container displays to order for customers who bring in their own pots, and the business takes on planting and maintenance contracts for gardens and grounds around the city. It is family-run and trades from a working nursery yard rather than a garden-centre-style showroom, with glasshouses and outdoor beds visible to browsing customers. It is open daily and draws trade from across south Sheffield for stock grown rather than bought in from wholesalers.
