Kathy Caton spent 2012 experimenting with botanicals and stills before settling on the recipe for Brighton Gin, distilled on Vale Road in Portslade. Every bottle is washed, filled, labelled and dipped in wax by hand rather than on a production line, and the gin is certified vegan with gluten removed during distillation. Early batches were tested on friends and family and sold behind the bar at the Urchin in Hove before the brand found wider distribution. The distillery now includes a gift shop and delivers local orders around Brighton and Hove by bike. Caton, appointed MBE in 2023 for services to business, built the company from a home experiment into the city's first modern distillery.
