There has been a pub on this site south of Hexham for close to two hundred years, originally trading as the Fox and Lamb. The Brooker family bought it in 1989 and have run it since, with the licence passing from Geoff Brooker to his son Mark in 2015, while Janet Brooker still oversees the kitchen. In 1992 the family started Hexhamshire Brewery to supply the pub and other local houses, moving the brew plant into the pub's own grounds in 2017 with new equipment. The Blackhall English Stout has become popular enough locally to outsell Guinness on the bar. CAMRA has named the pub Northumberland Pub of the Year and recognised it separately for its own-brew beer and value. Food runs from home-cooked lunches to a Saturday curry night, served in a low-beamed interior with a beer garden looking onto the brewery and the burn beyond it.
