Growlers & Cans opened on Chertsey Street in Guildford in February 2019, started by husband and wife Charlie and Maxine Martin after they judged that the town lacked a specialist craft beer bar and bottle shop. Six taps pour a rotating selection of craft beer for drinking in, while fridges hold bottles and cans from independent breweries across the UK and further afield for takeaway. Growlers, the US-style refillable bottles that give the shop its name, can be filled to order from the taps for drinking at home. The shop also stocks a small range of wine, artisan gins and mixers, and serves coffee from Guildford roaster Redber Coffee. Customers can bring their own food or order a delivery to eat at the bar, since the venue does not run a kitchen. Occasional events, including live jazz, run alongside the everyday trade, and it continues to be run day to day by its founders from the single shop that opened in 2019.
