There has been a pub on this corner of Upper St James's Street for around 150 years, and a tower brewery has occupied four floors at the rear since 1989, when Kemp Town Brewery was built inside the roof space by Bev and Brenda Robbins. Jennifer and Clark Left took over the pub in 2015 and, with Jack Tavare, restarted brewing under the name Hand Brew Co, though the company later moved its main production to a larger site near Worthing in 2020. The house beer, Bird, a 4.2% session bitter, is still brewed here in small batches. Sunday nights bring live jazz, and the pub fields its own cricket and cycling teams.
