Mary Chappelhow set up her pottery practice in 1995, later graduating with a first-class honours degree from Cumbria College of Art & Design in 2000 and working as first resident artist at the Rheged Discovery Centre near Penrith. In 2011 she moved into the Old Stables at Brougham Hall, a fourteenth-century building on the outskirts of Penrith, where she now runs Interlude Ceramics as a single studio and gallery. Pieces are thrown on the wheel and glazed in colours drawn from seasonal change in the Lake District landscape, ranging from tableware to one-off decorative forms. Chappelhow has also written a book on pottery technique and set a Guinness World Record for continuous wheel-throwing. The studio sells directly to visitors from Brougham Hall rather than through other retail outlets.
