Milton's Cottage on Deanway in Chalfont St Giles is the only surviving residence of John Milton, the place he took refuge during the Great Plague of 1665 while completing Paradise Lost. The Grade I listed timber-frame building opened as a museum in 1887, making it one of the oldest writer's house museums in the world. The collection holds first and rare editions; the garden is planted with trees, flowers and fruits referenced in his poetry. It receives no statutory funding.
