Caroline Newbrook opened Number Four on Butcher Row in February 2011, after training at catering college in Sarlat and bar school in Biarritz and working in restaurants from London to Malta and the French Alps; her parents had run a Shrewsbury bed and breakfast before a hotel and restaurant in the Dordogne. The café-bistro began as a twenty-five-seat ground-floor room in a former Holland & Barrett unit and grew in 2017 into a hundred-seat, architect-designed extension built into a neighbouring former dance studio. It serves breakfast and lunch through the week, Monday to Thursday until four, then stays open into the evening on Fridays and Saturdays.
