Palmers Fish & Chips traces its trade to the early 1900s, when the Palmer family first worked in the fish and chip business locally. Bernard Palmer and his eldest son Clive opened the current business on Market Street, Yeovil, in 1958; Bernard's younger son John joined as a partner in 1970 after training as a carpenter. The family once ran three shops in the town, on Market Street, St John's Road and South Street, before parking restrictions and town redevelopment prompted a move. After a five-year planning process, the business consolidated at its present site on Bunford Lane in 1998, where it continues to trade under family ownership. The shop fries and serves fish and chips for eating in or taking away, with a large dining area and car park. It closes on Sundays and opens across two sittings on the remaining days, serving a menu built around the fryer rather than a wider restaurant offer.
