Stephen's Bookshop has traded from 3 Church Street in Monmouth since 1979, with the present owner in charge for around three decades. The shop deals mainly in second-hand and antiquarian stock, filling shelves along a narrow ground-floor room with fiction, local history and collectable titles, alongside a smaller run of new books. It also sells cards, wrapping paper, secondhand CDs, video games and jigsaws, and buys books directly from the public. It stands next door to Rossiter Books, an unrelated new-book shop, on a street given over largely to independent traders. Church Street has no chain bookshop, and Stephen's has kept its stock informal, arranged by subject along wooden shelving rather than through a computerised catalogue.
