The John Hewitt is named for the Belfast poet and owned, unusually, by a charity: the Belfast Unemployed Resource Centre has held the pub since 1999, and its profits go back into the centre's training and advice work for people out of work. Since 2022 the day-to-day running has passed to Boundary Brewing, the city's brewing co-operative, under an agreement that leaves the ownership where it is. So a pint here funds something. Beyond the structure, it is one of the Cathedral Quarter's best rooms for traditional music and conversation, with a reputation for the talk. A community-owned pub in the literal sense, and one of the few anywhere run to fund the unemployed.
