Richard Dinwoodie and Mike Hill, the founders of the beer importer Utobeer, opened The Rake in 2006 on the site of a former café called the Jubilee, tucked down Winchester Walk beside Borough Market. The building has served drinks since the 1860s, but the bar itself measures barely thirteen feet by seven, seating forty-four across an inside room and a small decked area outside. Around a hundred bottled beers rotate through the fridges alongside five draught lines and three real ales, drawn from British, Belgian and American brewers. There is no kitchen, so the pub relies on the beer list rather than food to hold custom through the afternoon. Staff change the cask and keg lines often enough that regulars check the chalkboard before ordering.
