Wastenot opened inside Brighton Open Market on Marshalls Row in 2014, founded by Debbie Hardy as what is generally credited as the city's first zero-waste shop. The single unit sells food and household basics without the packaging, from dried pulses, grains and pasta weighed to order, to refillable detergents, bamboo toothbrushes and washable make-up remover pads, alongside bagged coffee beans. Hardy's own path to the shop began with time spent in Australia, where witnessing food waste firsthand and later joining Brighton's Food Waste Collective shaped the shop's founding idea of buying only what is needed. It remains a single stall within the covered market rather than a chain, run on the same principle of reducing packaging and food waste that opened its doors more than a decade ago.
