Beryl Country House was built in the Gothic Revival style in the 1850s on land recorded in Wells Cathedral documents as belonging to the Beryhale family as early as 1310. Solicitor Charles Bevan Jenkins bought the house in June 1917 and raised nine children there with his wife Kate; three of his daughters were still living in it into the 1970s. Edward and Holly Nowell bought the house at auction in 1979, and it has remained in the Nowell family since, now run by Holly Nowell with her daughter Mary-Ellen. Set in thirteen acres of parkland a mile from Wells Cathedral, the grounds include an oriental garden with a Chinese pagoda, a bluebell wood and a seasonal outdoor swimming pool. Guest rooms in the main house are furnished with antiques, and an adults-only bed and breakfast operates alongside a separate garden suite.
