Dan Holland left a job teaching maths at a local school to open Queen Street Delicatessen in 2008, in a narrow shopfront just off Wells High Street. The shelves run from marmalade and Mendip ice cream to chocolate, chutneys, fruit wines and fudge, most of it made within Somerset, alongside soups, sausages, bread and a changing selection of the county's cheddars. The till sits beside a chiller stocked with local pies and terrines rather than pre-packed sandwiches, and stock is stacked floor to ceiling in the small space. Holland and his small team know regular customers by name and will cut and wrap cheese to whatever weight is asked for. The shop supplies hampers for local hotels as well as passing trade, and stands a few doors from the cathedral green.
