Claudia Lis trained through a formal ceramics apprenticeship in Germany before moving to the UK in 1997 to work as an assistant to potter Rupert Spira. She opened her own studio at The Central on Montgomery's Princes Street in 2004 and has since built a body of wheel-thrown, celadon-glazed stoneware and porcelain, the soft green tones derived from iron oxide in the glaze, drawing on historic oriental forms. She is a Fellow of the Craft Potters Association and received a Creative Wales Award from the Arts Council of Wales in 2012. Her pieces have been shown at the Saatchi Gallery, the Royal College of Art and the Smithsonian Institution. The studio is open to visitors throughout the year, though callers are advised to telephone ahead before making the trip to Montgomery.
