Hart's Books traces its name to Henry Hart, who set up as a printer in Saffron Walden in 1836 before the firm expanded into stationery, musical instruments and eventually books. The original printing press is now on display at Saffron Walden Museum. After the shop closed in 2008, King Street was without an independent bookseller until Hart's reopened near its original site at Hart's Yard. The current shop stocks new titles across genres, a children's section with staff picks, and runs subscription boxes priced between one hundred and two hundred pounds a year for regular deliveries of curated reading. Fresh flowers sit on the counter and dogs are welcome in store. Author events and book launches are held regularly, and the shop opens seven days a week, including Sundays and bank holidays from eleven until five.
