Hartwells has traded as the village ironmongers in Bourton-on-the-Water since 1805, and the same family shop on the High Street now runs a cycle hire operation alongside its hardware counter. Hybrid and touring bikes, plus a pair of tandems, are available by the hour or day for rides along the Windrush valley and the wider Cotswold lane network; the shop does not hire mountain bikes or e-bikes. The ironmongers side continues to sell tools, hardware and household goods from premises that succeeded the family's original shop, sited a few dozen yards away on the same street. It operates as a single independent business rather than a cycle hire chain, combining two centuries of village retailing with a tourist-facing hire service built up over recent decades.
