The Heaton Coopers have painted the Lake District for four generations — Alfred from the turn of the last century, his son William, whose watercolours taught the twentieth century what the fells looked like, and the family artists since — and the studio William built off Grasmere's village green in 1938, paid for by his book Hills of Lakeland, still shows the dynasty's work across three galleries. The company register keeps it in the family: Julian and Rebecca Heaton Cooper sit among the directors, and Rebecca runs the operation day to day. A working family archive with a till and a café is a rare institution; Grasmere has two of the country's best small ones a stroll apart.
