Trading since 1974 as a bakery and cafe on Rydal Road, close to the centre of Ambleside. Head baker David Smith has worked at the ovens since 1986 and was runner-up in the British Baker magazine's bakery of the year competition. Bread, tray bakes, cream cakes and sourdough are made on site each morning, alongside the apple pie and bath buns the business is named for and known for locally. The cafe serves breakfast and lunch, with home-made soup, steak sandwiches and baked potatoes alongside the bakery counter. Seating is available for eating in, and the shop also does a steady take-away trade with walkers passing through on the way to Rydal Water and the fells. The business was named in the Guardian's list of the top ten places to eat in the Lake District in 2023. It remains family run, occupying the same Rydal Road premises it has traded from for five decades.
