Moseley Violins has operated from a workshop on Tudor Road since 1986, when luthier David Johnson set up on his own after five years in the trade in Beaconsfield and Birmingham. Three luthiers now work on the premises, repairing, restoring and setting up stringed instruments to order, alongside a bow rehairing service available by post as well as in person. The workshop also makes instruments to customer commission. In the early 1990s, work carried out here led to Violectra, a range of electric violins, violas and cellos now used by professional and touring musicians worldwide, developed after several years of research on site. The shop moved to its current Moseley premises from Digbeth's Custard Factory. Free assessments are offered for instruments and bows, with estimates given for repairs, restoration and insurance valuations.
