The Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre opened in June 2005 inside a former coaching inn on Great Missenden's High Street, the village where Dahl lived and worked until his death in 1990. It is an independent registered charity, and its collection includes the author's original manuscripts, correspondence and his Ideas Books. Three galleries structure a visit: Boy, entered through giant doors scented like chocolate, covers his school days; Solo houses the actual writing hut in which he worked, moved here piece by piece; and the Story Centre invites children to build their own sentences and characters. Among the objects on display is a sandal said to have inspired the shape of the BFG's boots.
