Spike Island occupies a former Brooke Bond tea packing factory on Cumberland Road, overlooking Bristol's docks, and operates as a registered charity governed by trustees. Over seventy artists rent studio space in the building at rates set to keep them working in Bristol rather than moving elsewhere, and the complex also houses Spike Print Studio, an open-access print workshop, and a separate workspace wing for creative businesses. The public galleries, open Wednesday to Sunday from midday to 5pm, run a changing exhibitions programme; a recent pairing put Nancy Lupo's Several Chickens Later alongside Tohe Commaret's Mijitas. A cafe on site keeps its own separate hours. Spike Island also hosts UWE's Fine Art courses and Visual Arts South West, tying the studios to wider art teaching in the city.
