The Cellar Door opened in November 2017 as Newport's first micropub, run by owner Paul Tully from a converted computer shop on Clytha Park Road. The single room carries no television, no fruit machines and no pool or darts, following the micropub model of favouring conversation over entertainment. A weekly-changing line-up of cask ales sits alongside ciders from independent Welsh and border producers, plus a short list of bottled lager, spirits, wine and soft drinks. Local artists show and sell work on the walls, and live music plays on Thursday and Sunday evenings. The pub welcomes families and dogs and stays closed Monday to Wednesday, opening from Thursday afternoon through the weekend, aiming at conversation and topical debate among a mixed local crowd.
