Family-run country house hotel in the hamlet of Greta Bridge on the A66, built around a 17th-century coaching inn where Charles Dickens is thought to have stayed while researching Nicholas Nickleby. Its bar carries a mural painted in 1946 by Guinness advertising artist John Gilroy, and the hotel now has 26 bedrooms and a spa.
