The Ropewalk occupies the former Hall's Barton Ropery on Maltkiln Road, a quarter-mile brick building first raised in 1767 where rope was spun until production ceased in December 1989. Reopened as an arts centre and run today as a registered charity, it holds five exhibition spaces with changing shows, fifteen artists' studios, a printmaking workshop and a picture-framing department. Ropery Hall stages live music, theatre, comedy and cinema, while the Craft Gallery sells work by regional makers. There is a coffee shop, a sculpture garden and a museum recording the site's ropemaking history. Admission to the galleries is free and they open seven days a week. Independent of the local council and supported by Arts Council England, the centre gives the North Lincolnshire coast a working home for exhibitions, performance and studio practice under one roof.
