The StudioGallery

Chris and Hannah Barker, who met at art college in the 1990s, took on a studio at Friary Villas on Friary Street in August 2016 to house The Smallprint Company, a letterpress print business built around antique cast-iron presses, wood and metal type, and hand-mixed inks. To the front of the workshop they run The Studio Gallery, an intimate space given over chiefly to fine art printmakers and photographers, with a changing exhibition programme rather than a fixed collection. Alongside showing other artists' work, Chris prints wedding stationery, posters and books using traditional methods, and the pair teach bookmaking and letterpress workshops from the same building. The gallery is a five-minute walk from Derby Cathedral. Open Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm, closed Wednesday and Sunday, with visits by arrangement recommended before a special journey.
