Trace Ceramics Studio was founded by ceramic artist Meichen Chen in a former industrial unit at Omega Works on Fish Island. Classes are capped at eight students so tutors can give one-to-one guidance through a session, whether that is a single two-hour taster or a six-to-eight-week course in wheel throwing or hand building. The hand-building curriculum includes kurinuki, an Eastern technique in which a cup is carved directly from a solid block of clay using knives or wire rather than built up from coils or slabs. Courses run alongside open studio membership for people who already throw and need bench space and a kiln. The studio keeps to five open days a week, closing on Saturdays, and sits among the wider cluster of makers' studios built up around Fish Island's subdivided industrial units.
