When Magma closed its Oldham Street shop in November 2020, Manchester briefly had nowhere to buy the world's strange and beautiful magazines; UNITOM opened in December 2021 on Stevenson Square to fix that, run by the arts consultancy Universal Tomorrow — co-directors Matthew Palentine and Wini Tse — with Tim Bell, Magma's former manager, behind the counter, which makes the succession about as legitimate as these things get. The shelves run from Kinfolk and The Gentlewoman through Phaidon and Taschen to zines stapled a mile away, with coffee from independent roasters as the closing argument.
