Two Polish brothers founded Barbakan on Manchester Road in 1964; Stefan Najduch bought it in 1985 and the Najduch family holds it still, which makes this one of the longest continuous stories in Manchester food. It is a bakery first — reportedly nine tonnes of flour a week into more than forty-five breads a day, the Norlander and the Polish rye with followings of their own — with the deli counters running Central European depth behind. The trade noticed formally in 2024: Craft Bakery Association Bakery of the Year and a La Liste pastry award in the same year. A smaller sibling opened in Wilmslow, disclosed here; the mothership stays in Chorlton, queue and all.
