Mark and Janine opened Arch & Abbey in 2018 after a pubco put them out of their previous pub in Scarborough. They crowdfunded the new venture and converted a former china and glassware shop on Skinner Street into a free house with no music, no televisions and no global beer brands. The bar rotates four real ales, three craft kegs and six ciders alongside more than seventy bottled and canned craft beers, most sourced from Yorkshire breweries. The Victorian storefront sits on a quiet stretch of old Whitby away from the harbour crowds, next door to a building that once housed a ladies' dress shop. Dogs are welcome and children are allowed until the evening.
