Royal Fisheries occupies a corner site on Baxtergate in Whitby, a short walk from the harbour, and has been run by the Fusco family since they took over the shop in 1968. The family's fish-frying business goes back further, to when Violet and Dennis Fusco began selling fish and chips in the 1950s; today it is run by Carol Fusco alongside her children Adrian, Stuart, Raymond and Maria. The shop fries in beef dripping rather than vegetable oil, a method the family has kept across three generations, serving haddock, cod and other North Sea fish alongside chips, mushy peas and curry sauce. There is a licensed sit-in café section as well as a takeaway counter, and the business has added a click-and-collect ordering option alongside its usual counter service. It holds a current Food Standards Agency hygiene rating, last inspected in mid-2024, and remains a single family-owned shop rather than part of any wider fish and chip group.
