Cod Roe Fishmongers trades from a small shopfront on Baxtergate, a short walk up from Whitby harbour, selling crab, lobster, scallops and whatever else the family's own boat and the wider Whitby fleet land that day. Natasha Roe-Smith runs the shop, and the business was the first in Whitby to join the Whitby Lobster Hatchery's Buy One Release One scheme, funding the release of hatchery-reared lobsters back into the bay for every one sold. In 2018 the Whitby Civic Society gave the shop a Certificate of Excellence for a shopfront redesign judged to suit the character of the street. Stock depends entirely on the tide and the weather, so what is on the slab changes day to day rather than following a fixed order sheet.
