Backhouse Rossie is a privately owned walled garden on the 110-acre Rossie Estate above the River Eden, run by the Thomson family. The garden holds a National Collection of Narcissus, propagating daffodil cultivars bred by the Backhouse family of Quaker horticulturists, and includes what is described as Scotland's longest interrupted rose archway. An 1830 estate map already shows the walled garden in place. The estate hosts Scotland's Daffodil Festival each April and holds Royal Horticultural Society Partner Garden status, one of only nine such gardens in Scotland. The Backhouse Kitchen serves home baking, light lunches and barista coffee to visitors and can be reached without a garden ticket. Dogs are welcome on the woodland walk and in the outdoor café area. The garden opens April to September, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday, 10am to 4pm, last entry 3.30pm.
