Clay Half occupies a former picture-framing shop on Murray Street in Montrose, opened by potter Irene Hughes in October 2022 after she began teaching ceramics at Springfield Creative Arts in Arbroath in 2016. The name refers to the old local division of Montrose recorded on historic maps, where the western side of the town nearest the tidal basin was known as the Clay Half and the eastern side as the Sand Half, a nod also to Hughes's earlier career as a cartographic technician. Classes run in four-week beginner blocks covering hand-building and wheel throwing, capped at between four and eight students per session, alongside weekly follow-on sessions for those developing their own projects and a Pottery Playground for children. Bookings are taken online, with private lessons available outside the scheduled timetable for those wanting one-to-one tuition.
